New tool - Impact for communication

We are excited to announce that we are piloting Impact inside Canvas! Impact will help us:

  • initiate just-in-time targeted messaging to specific users in Canvas

  • provide immediate and direct in-platform support for teachers and students

  • deepen our Canvas LMS adoption by understanding where and how Canvas tools are being used

What does this mean for you?

During this time you may start seeing different messages inside of Canvas. Generally, all users will not see all messages (unless it’s applicable to all). As we start to gather data, we will start customizing messages and campaigns based on specific roles, enrollments, and/or use of Canvas and/or different tools inside of Canvas. Reach out to us at teachingtools@umsystem.edu if you have any questions.

There are three types of messages that you may see and are encouraged to read (and take action afterward if/when applicable):

  • Hint messages: subtle messages that will appear when you look at or hover over a specific area/element inside of Canvas. We will use these to provide contextual quick notes, tips, and/or hints. These messages will not interfere with your existing workflow(s).

  • Systray messages: slightly larger than hint messages and will appear in the bottom left corner of your screen on (a) specific page(s). We will use these messages to provide more detailed, thorough, and/or enhanced information regarding Canvas, digital tools, and/or institutional announcements/messages. These messages will not interfere with your existing workflow(s).

  • Pop-Up messages: the largest of all three messages and will appear in the front and center of your screen (with everything else grayed out behind). We will use these messages sparingly to provide extremely important and/or time-sensitive information for users. These messages do interfere with your existing workflow(s), as you will have to read the message first and then X out of the message before being able to proceed with your current workflow. Again, these will be used sparingly based on an urgency/prioritization methodology.

To temporarily close an Impact message until your next login session, click the X at the top-right corner of the message. To permanently close an Impact message, select the box for “Don’t show again” and then click the X at the top-right corner of the message.
