New Quizzes do not transfer when exporting/importing course content from your individual campuses Canvas instance to One Canvas. Only the Assignment associated with the quiz copies over, and it requires minor editing. This is due to present limitations of Canvas' New Quizzes (Quizzes 2) tool.
- Export your old Canvas course material.
- Import your course content into your course in One Canvas.
- Select Assignments in your course menu.
- Locate an assignment previously associated with a New Quiz.
- Do not select the assignment title. Instead, select the three-dot menu icon at the far right of that row and choose Edit.
- Select More Options.
- Under Submission Type, select Find in the External Tool Options.
- Select Quizzes 2, then Select.
- Select Save.
- Select the Settings for the New Quiz based on the original settings.
- Rebuild the questions (excluding Hot Spot):
- In the original New Quiz, select to Edit the question.
- You may be asked to edit a copy of the question and/or to edit it in an item bank. If so, then choose that option.
- Copy the text and graphics from the question
- Because they are stored differently from regular Canvas images, the images in a New Quiz question will be visible to students when copied this way, the exception being images for Hot Spot questions.
- In the New Quiz question in the new course site select Add Content to create a new question.
- Choose the desired question type.
- Paste the question text/graphics into the Question Stem box.
- Copy and paste answers from the original to the question copy.
- Choose options, outcome alignments, or add it to a bank.
- Set Points
- Select Done.
Rebuild Hot Spot questions (these instructions are for Chrome):
- In the original New Quiz, select to Edit the question.
- You may be asked to edit a copy of the question and/or to edit it in an item bank. If so, then choose that option.
- Right-click on the image and select Inspect.
In the inspector, find the item that begins with <img alt="Uploaded Image" and right-click on the URL that is part of that item (See Fig. 1).
Figure 1: Image code in the inspector- Select Open in New Tab, which will actually cause the image to download to your drive.
Select the X at the upper right of the inspector to close it.
Copy the text of the question.
At this point, close out of the question editor as you will likely have edited the hot spot in the question by accident in step c., which is almost unavoidable.
In the New Quiz question in the new course site select the Add Content button to create a new question.
Paste the text of the question into the Question Stem box.
Browse or drag n' drop the image into the image box below the Question Stem box.
Draw the hot spot.
Choose options, outcome alignments, or add it to a bank.
Set Points
Select Done.
- In the original New Quiz, select to Edit the question.
Tip: It is useful to have one window open with the New Quiz on the old Canvas server and another with it open to the new quiz on One Canvas. This will allow you to more easily copy and paste from one to the other.
Note: If copying a fill-in-the-blank question with regular expressions, please be extra careful in copying the regular expressions, as these can corrupt the question and render the test unusable.
