Students who are beginning to take an exam that requires Proctorio sometimes have issues passing the exam pre-checks. The error messages students see looks like the image below.

The information below provides instructions for correcting errors with the webcam, microphone, and desktop screen sharing that students get when walking through the pre-checks.

Allowing microphone access in Chrome

  1. In Chrome, click the more icon (three vertical dots) in the top, right corner of the browser.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the left navigation panel, click Privacy and Security.
  4. In the Privacy and security section of the page, click Site Settings.
  5. Scroll down to the Permissions section, and click on Microphone.
  6. Make sure the correct microphone is selected.
  7. Make sure it is set to Ask before accessing (recommended is turned on. If it is off, it will state that the microphone is Blocked.
  8. Close Settings.

Allowing camera access in Chrome

  1. In Chrome, click the more icon (three vertical dots) in the top, right corner of the browser.

  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Privacy and Security.
  4. Click Site Settings.
  5. In the Permissions section, click Camera.
  6. Make sure the correct camera is selected.
  7. Make sure it is set to Ask before accessing (recommended is turned on. If it is off, it will state that the camera is Blocked.
  8. Close Settings.

Special instructions for Macs that cannot share the screen

  1. Open Mac System Preferences.
  2. Select Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Privacy tab.
  4. In the lefthand pane, scroll down and select Screen Recording. You may have to enter the computer password to make changes to this setting.
  5. Check the box next to Google Chrome.
  6. Close System Preferences.
