To foster a safe online learning environment, we must respect all opinions and experiences—no matter how different or controversial they may be perceived—in the tolerant spirit of academic discourse. Our differences add richness to the learning environment, and therefore, commenting on, questioning and critiquing your peers’ ideas is encouraged. Respectful disagreement is OK too; in fact, we should expect to see differences of opinion as we explore the course content. However, attacking an individual is unacceptable.
As I am sure you can agree, there is a major difference between disagreeing with an idea and attacking the individual who shared the idea. Keep in mind that sarcasm and humor can be misconstrued during online interactions. Thanks in advance for your time investing in our challenging but inclusive online learning community. I am certain that we will all rise to the challenge and opportunity to learn from and with one another.
